Movie Review: My Best Friend's Wedding

My first Julia Roberts starrer- My Best Friend’s Wedding was a total stunner. It started off on an ordinary note where a girl named Julianne (Julia Roberts) receives a phone call from her best friend for 9 years-Michael, and gets the shock of her life- Michael “met someone” and is getting married the same weekend!

Stung by the prior claim that he belonged to her, Julianne sets out for the wedding, determined to break the couple apart and bring Michael back. Over the next hour and thirty minutes, she does whatever lies in her capacity to birth problems between the soon-to-be-married Michael and Kimmy, disappointed every time the issues all seem to settle themselves given Kimmy’s utter dedication towards her man.

For a hard-core Bollywood fan who grew up watching movies where things always fall in place for the protagonist, this movie was quite a wonder for me. πŸ˜„ The fact that it did not turn out to be what I’d expected of it was all the more encouraging. Movies that end just the way you predicted are a bore indeed. Its way more fun when you don’t have the slightest clue about where the story is headed, or even if you think you do, you really don’t! Like when Michael and Julianne are together on a boat ‘alone for the last time’ as he calls it and quotes Kimmy as saying, ‘when you love someone, you say it. You say it right then, out loud. Otherwise, the moment just passes you by’, there are moments in the movie when you’re all set to enjoy Mike and Julianne get intimate, but the story doesn’t oblige! The movie not quite moving parallel to our Indian movies kept me hooked all along. It sounded closer to reality than the plots of most of our domestic films where the lead invariably gets what he wants in the end.

Another thing to look out for is Julia Roberts’ seamless performance and natural splash of emotions, not to forget her red curls (oh my god, I became a total fan of her hair!!😍), and of course, spicy young Rupert Everette playing Julia’s editor and gay-friend who’s there to lend her a patient ear every time she takes to frenzy!

Overall it was a delicious watch, n I’d recommend it to anyone looking for light-hearted leisure! 🀘🍿
